About Dr Lalitha de Silva

Dr De Silva is registered with the General Medical Council (G.M.C. Number 1576300) and holds the Medical degree of Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (M.B.B.S). She did her training in Psychiatry at Charing Cross and St Georges Hospital Medical Schools in London, and is a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Dr De Silva trained in Eating Disorders at the prestigious Eating Disorders Unit at St Georges Hospital in London and also specialises in Adult Psychiatry. Dr De Silva is registered on the General Medical Council Specialist Register. She is approved as having expertise in the assessment and treatment of mental disorders by the Secretary of State under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act (1983) and has been granted the Approved Clinician status.



Dr De Silva was Consultant Psychiatrist in Acute Psychiatry and Eating Disorders at a NHS hospital in Berkshire for over 20 years. She has extensive experience of treating a wide range of general psychiatric problems including Anxiety and Depression, She specialises in Eating Disorders, Obesity and related addictions. She founded and led a specialist eating disorders service in Berkshire whilst working for the NHS..She has a special interest in Women’s mental health problems.


Dr De Silva has worked in private practice in Windsor for over 20 years and has outreach clinics in Reading, Wokingham and London. She was the Clinical Director of the Cardinal Clinic, a private psychiatric clinic in Windsor, from 2007 until April 2013.

In addition to being a specialist in Psychiatry, Dr De Silva has also been trained in General Medicine, Child Health and Accident and Emergency Medicine.

Teaching, Training and Research

For five years, Dr De Silva was a Senior Examiner for the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ final exam for doctors specialising in psychiatry. She was a Clinical Tutor for Junior Psychiatrists for five years and a Regional Advisor for the Continuing Medical Education of Senior Psychiatrists for five years. She is currently a Senior Tutor for medical students from University College Hospital in London.

Dr De Silva has published research in General Psychiatry and Eating Disorders, was an advisor for a European Journal on Eating Disorders and has presented at international and UK conferences.


Dr De Silva was a Clinical Director of the Berkshire Health Care Trust for five years and was the Manager of the Berkshire-wide eating disorders service for a year. She was also the Clinical Director of the Cardinal Clinic in Windsor from 2007 until 2013.

National Role

Dr De Silva was a Medical Examiner for the Nursing and Midwifery Council for six years and a Medical Member of Mental Health Review Tribunals for 5 years. She was a senior investigator for complaints and inquiries about the standard of care for the NHS.
